A New Model and a New Direction for Lincoln

Lincoln announced the debut of the MKS full-size sedan at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The car’s clean, understated design continues a new direction at Lincoln, expressed in both the recently launched MKZ and the highly anticipated MKR. It’s a direction that is about “refinement rather than ostentation,” says Peter Horbury, Ford’s executive director of Design, North America.

Highlights of this direction that are evident in the MKS include the strong beltline, horizontal headlamps, and a pronounced “bow-wave” grill that is a nod to Lincoln’s heritage. “Lincoln MKS is a luxury car that doesn’t need to shout,” observes Horbury. “It captivates with a whisper.”

The new model also recognizes the role of technology and innovation in bringing luxury to the American car buyer. To this end, the vehicle incorporates SYNC, a fully integrated, voice-activated in-car communications and entertainment system for mobile phones and digital music players. The MKS comes with a 3.7L V6 engine generating 270 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. It will be available with either Front- or All-Wheel Drive as a 2009 model.

When will Ford learn to launch product with passion and not with a yawn? While the MKS is a fine product - it should have been launched with either the 4.4 L V8 or the 3.5 L Twin Force and with a sport handling package. Launching such a world class vehicle would bring the product to market with a BANG and it would garner some great reviews and street cred. While this high end unit would be low volumn it would be widely recognized as a big time winner and set the stage for the standard V6 model which will be the volumn seller.

All product launches should be with the good stuff first to validate the car as world class. We know that the standard model will be the big seller but launch with some sizzle!

Ford; PLEASE minimize the "dead" pedal. Those of us that are tall or have wide feet would appreciate the extra inch or two. If I can't find a comfortable seeting position, I'm not shelling out 40K (or even 25K for what it's worth) for a car regardless of how much I like it!
Jeff M says (November 23, 2008 at 6:26 pm):
I just saw the MKS in person at the LA auto show. I have to saw that it looks much better in person than it does in the pictures I have seen on the net.

The interior is also very nice, and I think looks and feels much richer than what is portrayed in the net pictures.

HOWEVER, and I have to throw this in. The fit and finish leave some room for improvement. On a car that can easily reach into the $40k range, I expect more. On the model at the show, the trunk wasn't straight, with it being flush with the rear quarter panel on the left but raised on the right; the molding around the rear drivers side door was peeling away from the frame; etc. These are small and nit-picky I suppose, but again, if I am going to shell out $40k of my hard-earned money for a car, I expect superior fit and finish.

That being said, if these things were fixed, and a few small changes were made to the interior, such as a more appropriate speedo and tach (those included are too plain and a bit out of touch with the rest of the interior), then I would say Lincoln has a worthy competitor to any other luxury brand.

The interior does feel rich. The car looks beautiful on the outside. It isn't a driver's car, from what I have read, but then again, 99% of the people that buy driver's cars never use them for what they were designed. So as a luxury hauler, I would say the MKS is very worthy. It isn't my kind of car, but if I were in that market it would be on my top list.

Good job Lincoln. Keep it up.

And these guys are the descendants of the people who crucified Preston Tucker!
Jimmie Miles says (November 6, 2008 at 10:55 pm):
The gorgeous Lincoln Town Car appeared to be an all-American luxury vehicle.
Where is it written that a luxury car should be small? This comes from the automobile pundits, who seem to think that every well-appointed car should be little and boxy. NOBODY in auto history ever produced more beautiful automobiles than Pierce-Arrow, Packard, Lincoln and Caddy. If someone wants a huge luxurious automobile, why can't that person have one if he/she can afford it without being looked upon as frivolous

This Car is excellent.

I feel sorry for the the yanks! In Australia we have excellent Ford vehicles such as The new FG Falcon(check out the GT) and Territory. We also get cars from Europe like the fantastic Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo. The Australians rejected the Mustang, Turaus, F-truck, Explorer and soon the Escape. Thats why Americans now do!
Johnny says (November 23, 2008 at 10:11 am):
That's how it was in 2005. Get with it, Glenn and Jonny!
I'd have to say this looks better than ANYTHING that comes from Japan, and even some things from Germany.
American cars are the way to go.
jonny from canada says (September 9, 2008 at 6:56 pm):
I agree. id love to buy Ford but not the American junk. Ford has lost me as a customer. my pickup is nissan and car an accord v6.
8MileChris says (June 23, 2008 at 6:32 pm):
If I were Bill Ford, fire Alan Mullaly and Peter Horbury and enlist up and coming hungry designers to bring f-l-m back from the dead.I design cars myself and as a young black man I can make Ford look like a start up company. I am alot smarter than Mullaly and those dreaded designers they have.If Ford was smart stop concepts and put out cars people want. they have too much over head thats why there is no profit the board of directors is holding that company back
Richard felici says (June 18, 2008 at 8:24 am):
MKS is a great looking car, but is available with rear wheel drive?
Steve says (June 16, 2008 at 10:13 am):
You are missing the point. I don't care how my HP it has as long as it performs. Taking 8 seconds to get to 60 MPH and only achieving 16/23 MPG for the AWD is poor performance -- plain and simple (the MKS has to be the slowest car with 270 HP on the market today). The S80 v8 has 40 more HP (and 50 more lb.ft or torque) , is much quicker and gets the same MPG. If the MKS had significanlty better fuel efficiency then I could live with the poor performance -- but it does not. FMC know they have a performance problem -- why else would they be coming out with the 3.5L Eco.
LOL says (June 17, 2008 at 11:57 am):
Love the new MKS commercial and the correlation to it being a spaceship..However it is less than factual as one thing that all spaceships have in common is that they are fast. At 8 seconds to 60 the MKS is more akin to a barge.... But even though it is pathetically slow it does at least burn fuel at the rate of a spaceship... Can't wait to see how they mess up the twin turbo version.. It will have 350 HP and probably get to 60 in 7 seconds. Pretty sad..
jd says (June 12, 2008 at 11:30 pm):
is everyone living in the same century as me. The car gets 24 mpg on the highway and 273 horses. Oh never mind i need a rwd v8 so i can spend 450 bucks a month at the gas station to get 20 - 30 more horses so i can out run the cops, get real!!!!. this car should and will be a success.
Reviewt says (June 5, 2008 at 8:45 am):
Fred....that is the problem with FMC -- there is always something coming.... in this case it is the engine that the car should have had from the beginning. 8.6K pre-orders is not going to save Lincoln -- niether is 36K per year. The thing that I don't understand is how they always seem to extract less from more.... The fuel efficiency of the 3.7L is only equal to the 4.4L V8 in the S80 but its much, much slower. In the MT review they estimate the 0-60 times at 7.9 seconds (other initial reviews peg it as being in the 7s) -- on the otherhand the 4.4L S80 sprints to 60 in the mid 5 second range. I have seen estimates on the 3.5L EB (with its 340 HP) which only provide 0-60 times in the mid 6 second range (again -- slower than its current competition). This is Lincoln dropping the ball, again -- they needed to beat the competition out of the shoot -- not promise improved performance down the road...and what's with the late availability of the 20 inch rims -- doesn't say much for lincoln if it takes them close to a year (from the time the car was announced in 11/07 to the time you will be able to get them (9/08). to bring them to market. My wife I both own Lincolns (LS and MKX) -- and the MKS was to be my next purchase (was) --but I'm sick of all these false starts.
fred says (June 4, 2008 at 8:33 pm):
This looks great, EcoBoost is comming ina few more months (Jan. 2009) and it offers an AWD so what if it is not a RWD. AWD is better than RWD.
Lincoln has 8.6k preorders now, this car means the comeback of Lincoln.
CarManCam says (May 13, 2008 at 10:57 am):
Not to put down FoMoCo although I love them, the taillights look like they came off the brand new impreza sedans. Also put the EcoBoost V6 in a Ranger with a 6speed manual, then it will be a really fun truck.
Damian says (May 10, 2008 at 11:52 am):
For the guy that said that this car could be like a lexus or acura, body this is way ahead that. it is beautiful thats the way lincoln.
Too Bad FMC says (April 16, 2008 at 10:52 am):
Wow -- seams that interest in the MKS has dried up already. No posts since 3/25.
FMC -- here is a hint 1) Don't launch a car 9 Plus months before it will be available, 2) Don't launch it with an underpoweredengine and finally 3) Don't launch tell people about the Eco-Boost engine (the one that the car should have been launched with) 18 months before you can own one.
By the way the much touted 20" wheels won't be available for production until October -- almost a year after they started making a big deal about them. Doesn't say much for FMC when it takes them a year to procure wheels.. They have even taken them off the MKS sight as an orderable optin. Well done....
Delay? says (May 8, 2008 at 5:05 am):
Can anyone confirm if the MKS is delayed? Spoke with my LM dealer and he told me that they would not be seeing one until late August. Just for kicks I called 3 other nearby dealers and was told as late September.
Also has anyone heard when the EcoBoost engine would be available for order? Ford's criptic "within a year of launch" could put it as far out as next fall is deliveries don't begin until August/September.
